2007 - Modeling Challenges in Process Development:Approaches in the Chemical and Pharmaceutical Industries

A Two Day Workshop Organized and Sponsored by the Pharmaceutical Industry and the Council for Chemical Research
June 7 and 8, 2007

The Pharmaceutical Industry and the Council for Chemical Research organized a two-day workshop on modeling challenges in process development that brought together participants from the pharmaceutical and chemical industries. The objectives of this two-day workshop are:

  • To educate participants on how leading companies in both industries are using modeling in their process development efforts
  • To provide academic and vendor perspectives on the future of process development modeling
  • To identify specific opportunities for cross-industry collaborations that can yield concrete and mutually beneficial results;
  • To provide opportunity for participants to interact and network with colleagues from another industry who may have overlapping interests

Two years ago, the Council for Chemical Research (CCR), as part of its mission to advance research in the chemical sciences through leadership collaboration, undertook an initiative to focus on collaboration opportunities between the pharmaceutical industry and the CCR. A steering committee comprised of representatives from the CCR and the pharmaceutical industry identified a number of technical areas where increased collaboration would likely prove valuable to both groups.

In December 2005, the first workshop was held on the topic of Process Analytical Technology (PAT). The program was well-attended. The participants felt it was extremely worthwhile and strongly encouraged the steering committee to pursue additional topics.

UMBI SHADY GROVE:
The University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute is an independent research component of the University System of Maryland. UMBI's five research centers collaborate with industry, other institutions, and federal laboratories on research, educational initiatives, product and service development, training workshops, short courses, symposia, and seminars throughout the year. The Shady Grove campus hosts the Center for Advanced Research in Biotechnology (CARB), a cooperative venture of the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute (UMBI) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The internationally recognized research programs at CARB are focused on the structure, function, design and evolution of biological macromolecules, and rely on both theoretical and experimental approaches. A recent expansion of UMBI at Shady Grove added new core facilities for insect transformation, GMP training and biomanufacturing, plant transformation, genomics and proteomics, and structural biology.
