Annual Meeting

The Business of Water:
Problems, Solutions, and Opportunities for the Chemical Enterprise

A healthy chemical enterprise is vital for society to use resources efficiently, provide sustainable environmental performance and enable strong economic development. Water is an essential resources and availability could limit future development.  The two largest users of water, agriculture and energy, are dependent on the chemical enterprise to provide water affordably and with of the required quality.  The chemical enterprise also uses water directly in many processes and cooling applications. Sustainable development demands new approaches to manage and treat water more efficiently.  This will require collaborative R&D in academics, government, and industry to address the growing need. Water was the focus of the 2009 Council for Chemical Research annual meeting. Key leaders throughout the U.S. chemical research enterprise were in attendance from CEOs and CTOs of major chemical companies, to directors of large government laboratories and agencies, to department heads of research-intensive universities. The 30th Anniversary Meeting theme got back to the basics: "The Business of Water: Problems, Solutions, and Opportunities for the Chemical Enterprise."
